Road Safety

Driver and pedestrian education, safer school routes, responsible driving, and practical measures that reduce preventable injuries.

Overview

Road safety is essential to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the wellbeing of entire communities. Across many parts of Africa, including Ghana, road crashes continue to affect children, workers, passengers, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The consequences extend far beyond the scene of an incident. A serious collision can remove a family's main source of income, interrupt a child's education, create long-term disability, and place additional pressure on health and social care systems.

Beyond Despair believes that many road incidents can be prevented when communities have access to practical education, visible safety measures, and responsible transport systems. Our Road Safety Programme is designed to improve how people understand and respond to everyday road risks. It focuses on the routes people use most often, including roads around schools, markets, transport terminals, workplaces, and densely populated neighbourhoods.

We work with schools, transport unions, local authorities, community leaders, parents, drivers, and volunteers. This collaborative approach helps communities identify local hazards, improve road-user behaviour, and develop solutions that reflect the realities of each location.

Objectives
Increase public understanding of safe driving, walking, cycling, and passenger behaviour
Reduce the exposure of schoolchildren and other vulnerable road users to preventable risks
Encourage drivers and transport operators to adopt responsible and lawful road practices
Help communities identify dangerous locations and advocate for appropriate safety improvements
Core activities
Deliver road safety education in schools, communities, markets, and transport hubs
Organise driver-engagement sessions on speeding, fatigue, distraction, seatbelts, helmets, vehicle condition, and responsible passenger loading
Teach children and adults how to cross roads safely, use pedestrian routes, and remain visible in low-light conditions
Conduct community safety walks to identify risky junctions, school routes, missing signs, poor lighting, and other hazards
Work with relevant authorities and local partners to support school crossings, road signs, markings, reflective materials, and traffic-calming measures
Promote first-aid awareness and clear community procedures for responding to road incidents
Use local media, community events, and public campaigns to reinforce road safety messages throughout the year
Delivery approach

Every intervention begins with listening to the people who use the road daily. Teachers, parents, drivers, traders, students, and residents help identify the most urgent concerns. Beyond Despair then works with appropriate partners to select practical actions, define responsibilities, and communicate safety information in accessible language.

The programme combines education with visible action. Training alone is not enough when a dangerous crossing, poor signage, or unsafe transport practice remains unaddressed. We therefore encourage coordinated solutions that bring together behaviour change, community oversight, and improvements to the local road environment.

Intended outcomes
Children and adults demonstrate stronger knowledge of safe road use
Drivers and transport operators adopt safer practices
High-risk school and community routes receive greater attention
Communities respond more effectively when incidents occur
Local partnerships support a lasting culture of road safety
Why support matters

Road incidents can change a family's future in seconds, yet many are preventable. Support for this programme helps Beyond Despair reach more schools, engage more drivers, equip communities with practical safety resources, and advocate for safer everyday journeys.

Help us make everyday journeys safer for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and children.
