Programme 02

Youth Empowerment

Mentorship, practical skills, enterprise support, and leadership opportunities that help young people build meaningful futures.

Overview

Young people are central to Africa's social and economic future. They carry new ideas, energy, creativity, and the potential to transform their communities. However, many young people face unemployment, limited access to practical training, weak professional networks, and too few opportunities to turn their abilities into sustainable livelihoods.

Beyond Despair's Youth Empowerment Programme is designed to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity. It helps young people develop practical skills, confidence, discipline, leadership ability, and a clearer understanding of the pathways available to them. The programme supports young people who are in school, leaving school, seeking employment, building a business, or looking for a constructive role in community life.

We work with schools, training institutions, employers, entrepreneurs, mentors, local organisations, and community leaders. By connecting learning with real opportunities, the programme aims to help young people move from uncertainty to purposeful action.

Objectives
Equip young people with relevant skills for employment, enterprise, and independent living
Increase access to mentorship, career guidance, and professional networks
Support youth-led ideas that address economic or social needs within communities
Encourage leadership, responsible citizenship, and positive participation in community development
Core activities
Provide vocational, digital, entrepreneurial, financial-literacy, and employability training
Offer career guidance, CV support, interview preparation, and workplace-readiness sessions
Connect participants with mentors, professionals, entrepreneurs, and positive role models
Support promising youth-led enterprises with business coaching, market preparation, and small grants where resources allow
Develop partnerships that create internships, apprenticeships, work experience, and employment pathways
Use sports, arts, culture, and community projects to strengthen confidence, teamwork, and communication
Create leadership and volunteering opportunities that allow young people to contribute to local decision-making and development
Delivery approach

The programme begins by understanding the needs, interests, and circumstances of participating young people. Training is then shaped around local employment opportunities, community needs, and practical skills that participants can use. Sessions may combine classroom learning, demonstrations, mentorship, peer support, and hands-on projects.

Beyond Despair also recognises that training without follow-through can leave young people disappointed. We therefore aim to connect learning with next steps, such as continued mentoring, business support, further education, work placements, volunteering, or introductions to partner organisations.

Intended outcomes
Young people gain practical, relevant, and transferable skills
Participants show greater confidence and readiness for work or enterprise
Youth-led initiatives contribute positively to their communities
More young people access mentors, networks, and opportunity pathways
Communities benefit from stronger youth participation and leadership
Why support matters

When young people are excluded from opportunity, communities lose talent and frustration can deepen. Supporting this programme helps remove barriers, develop employable skills, nurture responsible leadership, and give young people practical reasons to believe in their future.

Invest in the skills, ideas, confidence, and leadership of the next generation.
